01 Jul Feast or famine in JUne grade 5
June 30, 2019 (OYSTER BAY, NY) – The day started with the perfect conditions for the six teams to race Swedish Match 40s: 12 knots of breeze and sunny skies. Just after the second flight the breeze shut off. Not long after, a squall line rolled through with 30 knots of breeze and torrential rain. It left a dying 7 knot breeze that lasted just long enough to run one more flight.
Lionel Crear and his crew managed the rapidly changing conditions well and won the regatta going undefeated for all three flights. “Getting the right information about what the wind was doing from my crew was critical,” said Crear. “I was able to sail really aggressively at the starts and know whether I wanted to win the pin or the boat and push or lead back to the line.”
The starts were very competitive. In nearly half of them, the port entry boat got the cross to lead into the playground. Second place was a three-way tie between Ward Brooks, Peter Humphrey, and Doug Shannon. After PRO Danielle Gallo broke the tie, it was first-time Skipper Peter Humphrey who took second with Doug Shannon rounding out the podium.
